RB-26 Invader

RB-26 Invader - A WWII Era Reconnaissance/bomber Aircraft

1953-1957

The 183d Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (Night-Photographic) was officially established on July 1, 1953, when it was constituted and allotted to the National Guard Bureau. The unit was activated and federally recognized on the same day.

The squadron was formed in response to the growing need for tactical reconnaissance operations during the Korean War, marking a significant moment in the history of the Mississippi Air National Guard.

The unit was assigned 18 RB-26 aircraft, a modified twin-engine bomber that first saw service in World War II.

Today, one of the Squadron's original RB-26s stands guard at the main gate of the airbase. It remains a testament to the dedicated Airmen who braved the utterly hostile mission of the night Reconnaissance flight.
