The 172d Tactical Airlift Group's designation changed once more o July1, 1986, when it became the 172d Military Airlift Group. In a significant moment for the Mississippi Air National Guard, the arrival of the first C-141B Starlifter marked the beginning of the new era in strategic airlift for the 172d Military Airlift Group. With a total of eight of these advanced aircraft in its fleet, the unit was now capable of expanding its reach across the globe and taking on even more ambitions missions.
Designed to transport heavy cargo and personnel across long distances, the C-141B Starlifter greatly expanded the unit's global range, and provided an essential asset for both state an national mission. In 1995, the unit received its latest redesignation to the 172d Airlift Wing, increasing the unit's leadership and command responsibilities. Later that year, on November 20th, Congressman G.V. Sonny Montgomery announced that the 172d Airlift Wing would receive the C-17 Globemaster III.
