On July 1,1962, the unit's designation changed again, when it became the 183d Air Transport Squadron (Heavy), operating the C-121C. This conversion marked a major shift in the unit's capabilities, as the C-121C was a highly capable cargo plane that could carry a wide range of equipment and supplies. With this new aircraft in its inventory, and a new airbase complex nearing completion, the unit was able to take on new missions and provide even more essential support to both state and national operations.
