2003-Present

In December of 2003, the 172d Airlift Wing underwent a significant transition with the arrival of the first C-17 Globemaster III. The acquisition of the aircraft marked the end of the wing's use of the C-141C Starlifter.

The "keys" to the new aircraft were handed over by Lt. Gen. Daniel James III, the Director of the Air National Guard, to Maj. Gen. James H. Lipscomb III, the Adjutant General for the Mississippi National Guard.

The C-17A -1112, also known as the "Spirit of Minutemen", was the first Globemaster assigned to the Air National Guard. Its arrival signified a major step forward for the Mississippi National Guard's airlift capabilities. The C-17 was a highly advanced and versatile aircraft, capable of carrying large amounts of cargo and personnel over long distances with great speed and efficiency.

The transition to the new aircraft was a significant undertaking for the 172d Airlift Wing, requiring extensive training and preparation for the new system. However, the arrival of the C-17 marked a new era for the Mississippi National Guard, providing enhanced airlift capabilities for both domestic and international missions. The Spirit of the Minutemen would become a symbol of the wing's commitment to excellence and service to its country.

Throughout its history, the 172d Airlift Wing has played an important role in both state and national missions, providing essential transport and logistical support to troops and civilians alike. Its many redesignations reflect its ongoing evolution and its stead fast dedication to excellence in all that it does. Earning 19 Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards and Meritorious Unit Award, the 172d Airlift Wing continues to uphold its proud tradition of service, standing ready to respond to any call to duty and serve the needs of its community and its country.
