172nd AW Units 172d Airlift WingRegarded as the "Wings of the Deep South," the mission of the 172d AW is to constantly improve our combat capability to defend our nation and support our state. The wing's vision is to be the most responsive, most resourceful and most respected airlift wing on the planet. With its fleet of nine C-17 aircraft, the Mississippi Air National Guard unit has a global reach with the ability to move, supply or position assets anywhere - with unrivaled velocity and precision. The wing command section includes the commander, vice commander, command post and the Command Chief Master Sergeant. 172d AW staff offices include Safety, Judge Advocate, Finance, Chaplain, Plans and Public Affairs. There are five major units under the wing. They include Wing Headquarters, Operations Group, Maintenance Group, Mission Support Group and the Wing's Medical Group. 172d Operations Group The mission of this group is to train and supply mission ready tactical airlift and aeromedical aircrews for state, national and global contingencies. Subordinate units include: · 183 Airlift Squadron · 183 Air Evacuation Squadron · 172 Airlift Control Flight · 172 Operations Support Flight 172d Medical Group Trains and provide mission-ready personnel to support combat and peacetime contingency operations worldwide. 172d Maintenance Group Responsible for the maintenance of nine C-17 aircraft that provide tactical airlift, aeromedical and humanitarian services on a global level.
